Douglas County School District Grants Charter to Hope Online Learning Academy Co-op

Englewood, CO — February 21, 2008 — In a unanimous decision, Douglas County School District’s (DCSD) Board of Education approved a charter for Hope Online Learning Academy Co-Op (Hope Online), a virtual charter school designed to meet the needs of K-12 at-risk students in Colorado.

“Moving our charter to Douglas County is a significant milestone in Hope Online’s short history,” said Heather O’Mara, Executive Director of Hope Online. “With DCSD’s vast experience in charters, its quality management, its openness to innovation and its commitment to academic excellence, Hope Online will be in a strong position to fulfill its mission of closing the achievement gap and improving the graduation rate in the state of Colorado.”

Hope Online provides a robust opportunity for Colorado’s K-12 students to learn online in a nurturing environment. This environment is provided at Learning Centers established by community organizations with a commitment to education, and a low 1:18 adult to student ratio. Started in 2005, Hope Online now serves 3,270 students across the Front Range.

In early 2007, Hope Online engaged DCSD to provide evaluation, oversight and expert advice on issues regarding compliance. Since that time, DCSD has assisted Hope Online in the development, documentation and implementation of accreditation review standards and accountability measures for its 67 Learning Centers.

“Over the past year, we have had the good fortune of working with Hope Online and witness the positive impact they are having on Colorado children and their families,” says DCSD Superintendent Jim Christensen. “This will be a mutual learning partnership. Hope Online brings to DCSD extraordinary insight and experience in serving an at-risk population and using technology to serve the students’ needs.”

“In only three years of operation, Hope Online has made significant inroads in reaching students who may have been unreachable by putting technology and a supportive environment within their reach,” said Phil Fox, Chairman of the Board of Hope Online. “I applaud Douglas County for recognizing the potential of Hope Online and becoming its shepherd into the future.”

Hope Online’s charter, which will be moving from Vilas RE-5 School District to DCSD, will be effective for the 2008/09 school year.
